A trip to Hampton court
Forms 1 and 2 (Years 5 and 6) recently visited Hampton Court Palace, as part of this term’s topic of Travel and Treason.
Here, they explored the world of Henry VIII and took part in a drama workshop based on Tudor exploration.
Here are some of their impressions:
“I loved the astronomical clock – it was amazing! The zodiac signs, the changing sun and moon, the blues and golds….and so large!”
“The palace was amazingly well preserved and very beautiful.”
“It was great how we became Henry’s explorers.”
“The best thing about Hampton Court Palace was by far the astronomical clock, as it was advanced, accurate and hypnotic.”
“Hampton Court is full of rooms. Thomas Wolsey is shown to be rich, by saying, as he built the Palace, that every brick would cost £10.”
“I found it fascinating, finding out about all the secrets of the Palace, like the ghost story of Catherine Howard.”
As well as learning about the War of the Roses, where their topic began, they have studied Tudor paintings, and the messages they convey; extracts from Shakespeare’s plays; the wives of Henry VIII, and the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
The children will go on to look at the difference between medieval, Tudor and modern maps, Tudor ships and the voyages of Sir Francis Drake.
‘Travel and Treason’ will reach a delicious conclusion near the end of term with a Tudor Banquet!
