'Vicious Vikings' Invade St Benedict’s School
Over 45 pupils from local primary schools joined St Benedict’s School for a lively morning learning about Viking history.
Led by teachers from St Benedict's Senior School, the event was attended by Year 5 children from seven different schools, including North Ealing and Selborne primaries, Holy Family School, St Vincent’s School, Christ the Saviour School, Avenue House and St Benedict's School.
The morning began with an introduction by Deputy Head of Geography, Mr Flavell who spoke about the different Viking territories and routes and tasked the children with identifying flags from the various countries affiliated with Vikings and their explorations.
The session continued in the library, where Deputy Headmaster, Mr Ramsden, engaged the children by presenting a colourful history of Vikings from the Year 800 when they started to raid the British Isles. They learnt some fun Viking riddles and were presented with the Viking alphabet so they could recreate their names using Viking symbols.
His presentation was rudely interrupted when the library was unexpectedly stormed by a group of St Benedict’s ‘Vikings’ in the form of Sixth Formers who took the visiting pupils and teachers by surprise by re-enacting a Viking invasion!
One pupil commented; ‘My favourite part of the day was when, out of nowhere, some Vikings stampeded the library.’
The morning ended with a highly animated and super-charged musical session with Director of Music, Mr Eastwood where the children composed and sang raucous Viking chants together.
Before going home, each visiting school had the opportunity to dress up in Viking accessories, and have their photos taken making their best Viking pose.
Everyone had lots of fun while learning a great deal about Vikings !
