Learning about Healthy Eating the fun way
Children at St Benedict’s Junior School have been learning about healthy eating this week, with the help of a lively, Ealing-based theatre-in-education company - ‘I know why it’s yum mum!’
Throughout a highly entertaining show called “Dr Freg and the Fruit and Vegetable Mysteries”, the benefits of eating different fruit and vegetables, grains, seeds and water were presented to children in years 1 to 6. The company explained the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of nutrients in fruit and vegetables, seeds and cereals.
Following the musical show, years 1 to 4 took part in workshops aimed at increasing voluntary and proactive eating, helping parents to get children to eat their 5-a-day. The children sang the Rainbow Diet Song and took part in a variety of fun activities, such as the fruit and vegetables Top Trump game. This is linked to the PSHE theme being taught across St Benedict's Junior School.
- I liked the rainbow song, it was a fun way to learn about healthy eating. I learnt that sunflower seeds are good for your brain!"
Iona (Year 5)
I think that it was really useful because it helped me know what different fruit and vegetables do for the human body."
William (Year 3)
I learnt that you have to eat vegetables of different colours every week."
